Welcome to our Ask the Expert section, where your most pressing skincare questions are answered by our resident glotherapeutics expert, Sarah Burns Eggenberger.

What products do you recommend before and after a chemical exfoliation treatment?

gloLightening SerumBefore chemical exfoliation treatments, it is a preferred method to prep the skin using exfoliants. This will help to remove dead skin cells so that the treatment can penetrate deeper in the skin. It will also be a good indicator for you because you can get a bird’s eye view as to how the skin may respond to chemical acids. If the client uses the Renew Serum with Glycolic, Salicylic and Retinol and their skin soughs, then you know they are going to respond very quickly to the treatment.

On the other hand, if the client does not experience any tingling or sloughing then you know you can be a little more aggressive with the treatment. If the client has hyperpigmentation or is a higher Fitzpatrick number, then a lightening product is highly recommended to control hyperpigmentation and to start to actively treat the pigmentation. Using the Lightening Serum with 2% Hydroquinone and Kojic Acid is very effective with hyperpigmentation pre and post treatment.

gloPeptide + DefenseThe Super Serum and/or Peptide + Defense are products that should be used pre and post treatment to provide nourishing and healthy ingredients to the skin. During a series of chemical exfoliation treatments, the skin needs to be energized with antioxidants and healing ingredients.

After the treatment, the client may be red or irritated. In those situations or in case of a reaction the Remedy Gel will provide instant comfort and relief. It should be on hand and the client should have immediate access to it if needed.

As a suggestion, you may want to promote chemical exfoliation packages with retail products. That way the client understands the retail products and treatments work synergistically together. Alternately, you could even add the cost of the products into the series and give the retail products to your client as part of the package. The results from chemical exfoliation treatments and retail products are more than double their investment.

Q: What is chirally correct and how is it beneficial?

chirally correctA molecule is considered chiral if it differs from its mirror image. For example, hold out your hands in front of you. Notice that they are mirror images of each other. If you place your right hand on top of your left hand, you can demonstrate this difference. None of the features of your hands will line up when stacked on top of each other; though they have the same features, they are exact mirors of each other. This means your hands are chiral.

Certain ingredients in glotherapeutics products are lab produced and will be made of 2 forms: Left (L for left) and Right (D for dextro). These ingredients are mirror images of each other, not exact duplicates. One side of the ingredient is more useful and beneficial to the skin, while the other side is useless. glotherapeutics only uses the purest, highest quality form, making the products superior in the results.

Q: How do I control acne breakouts?

gloClear collectionAcne is a condition that effects many:

  • 40 million people suffer from acne between the ages of 12-24
  • 20% of adults have acne
  • 85% will experience some type of breakouts
  • 1 out of 16 people will have acne

There are 4 major steps to control and prevent breakouts.

1. Control oil production
2. Unplug the compaction
3. Rid of bacteria
4. Reduce inflammation

Breakouts have a lifespan of 2-4 weeks. The start of a regimen will treat existing, superficial lesions then move into preventing breakouts. A continued program will address the root of the problem and make the corrections before they are visual on the skin. Stick with your program for at least 8 weeks to see true results.

Q: If the client did not experience skin sloughing after a peel, was the treatment effective?

glotherapeutics treatmentYes. When a light chemical exfoliation treatment is performed you may or may not get skin sloughing. There are many variables that will contribute to the skin's response. If the client does not peel, the treatment is still effective. The use of home care products, different prepping methods and treatment options will affect the outcome.
Everyone responds differently to the acids and each acid has different properties. Try changing the chemical exfoliant to get a different response from the skin. The skin can become resilient to the chemical exfoliants so it may be necessary to "outsmart" the skin by changing the treatment.
There may be some clients who do not want to peel in which case you want to offer the option of a refreshing treatment without the downtime. Some clients will prefer progressive treatments versus aggressive treatments.

Q: How often can a chemical exfoliation treatment be performed?

glotherapeutics gloLactic - mild peelThe time to wait in between each chemical exfoliation treatment will vary depending on the strength. The rule of thumb is to never peel a peeling skin. If a client is still peeling when they come in for their next treatment offer a facial or a enzymatic exfoliation to remove the dead skin cells.

The suggested frequency is listed for each protocol, located in the Resource Center.* Typically, the more superficial chemical exfoliation treatments may be performed every 7-14 days for a series of 4-6 treatments and followed by once per month maintenance. Deeper chemical exfoliants will be spaced farther apart, which may be once per month or once per quarter.
